Geeking out

I just thought I would show off my new black Macbook in the process of transferring all my data from my old ibook. The whole process only took alittle under 2hrs. And when the new book booted up for the first time, it was all done. Email, preferences, and even the desktop had all the same icons and background. Setup done, leaving much more time for geeking out. Especially when I got to video chat on my new built in isight. Mac does it again.

Windows Vista!?!?

I was sent this comic and I laughed so much I just had to post this. Oh how us Mac users just love to hate Microsoft. Oh, and for you PC users out there who don’t quite get this joke, first of all, I do feel for you as there was a time when I was just like you, secondly, to help you out here, when us Mac users will look to get the next version of our beloved OS X, we will have one option and it costs quite abit less than any of these Windows upgrades do. The current Mac OS is $149, with all the features and no need to get any other version. Windows Vista Basic which has no extra features is $259 while the Premium Home version (which has some similar extras most comparable to Mac OsX is $299) I think I’ll stick with my Mac.

Blogger Tool added

So I thought that if I was going to post more to my blog that I should add a new tool on my computer. Its a blogging tool for my dashboard. Sorry for those PC users if you don’t have this as its a mac os thing. Anyways, it allows me to make a new addition to this fine blog without visiting the site. Hopefully when I see this tool on a daily basis I will be reminded to post something. So this one was easy as I have something to write about. Until next time.

Hallowed Evening

The following is a post from a blog I occasionally read by Robbymac on Halloween. First off I must confess that I was always in the camp of being completely against halloween. However, I believe that this guy has some great things to say to the church on this holiday.
Here is what Rob has to say…

John Fischer writes in “Fearless Faith (Living Beyond the Safe Walls of Christianity)”:

“The more acceptable Christian thing to do now on Halloween is to close up the house and have an alternative party for our kids at church. The party usually has a harvest or biblical character theme — no ghosts or goblins allowed. Though I understand how this safer alternative came to be, I wonder whether a blanket boycott is the only way to handle this controversial holiday. Is this just one more time when we as Christians isolate ourselves from the rest of our culture for religious reasons apparent only to us? Have we really thought through what our dark houses are saying to the rest of the block while we’re off having our alternative party? I can hear the neighbourhood kids shuffling by our house, saying, “Don’t go there, they don’t give anything.” Is this what we want to be known for in the community — a dark house on the one night you can be guaranteed neighbors will visit?

“If Satan comes out on Halloween, he doesn’t go back into hiding the next morning. Regardless of the origins of Halloween (and there appears to be little agreement about this, even among historians), what we have today is a culture-wide event that is more concerned with pretending than it is with the underworld… If Satan wins anything on this day, he may win more through the darkened homes of Christians than through anything else.” (published by Harvest House — I highly recommend this book)

When we were pastoring in Victoria BC, Christians didn’t do anything to celebrate Halloween — there were lots of “Harvest Parties” in various church buildings instead. Given the police guarding the Ross Bay Cemetary so no bodies would be stolen that night, nor to forget the animal sacrifice that was done on our front yard in the hey-day of “Rock The City”, or one of the local shaman dressing up in his ceremonial garb to personally curse me — you can understand why particpating in Halloween wasn’t even a debatable question in Christian circles in Victoria during the 1990′s.

Now that we’re in Winnipeg, we take our kids out trick-or-treating every year, for the same reasons that John Fischer illustrates above. It’s like being part of the community here to join in the fun. We don’t let our kids dress up in death-inspired outfits (our son went as a box of Cheerios one year, and our daughter once went as a potted plant — WAY more creative than a Freddie Kreuger mask!). But we go with them and mingle with our community. I even (unknowing at the time) had a joking conversation with the premier of Manitoba — I didn’t recognize him in a yellow rain slicker without tons of microphones being shoved into his face.

Even more fun are our Anglican neighbours across the street — every year, they have hot chocolate, coffee, tea, and penny candy for everyone who stops by their outdoor bonfire. They play jazz or blues music on a ghetto blaster, and it becomes the gathering place for tons of people — and the many Christians who live on our street have a great opportunity to mix and mingle with our non-Christian neighbours and give a cup of hot chocolate in Jesus’ name. It rocks!

Two different approaches to Halloween. Definite reasons behind each. Whether you choose to participate or not, at least think through what you’re communicating to the community you’re trying to impact for Jesus.

Busy life continues

Well, fall is well underway and it is so busy that I only found time to blog while I am at a youth workers convention here in Saskatoon. It is a simulcast from BC and it was to start about 20minutes ago, but there is technical difficulties and we are waiting. Luckily, the conference is at my home church and I can connect to the net wirelessly with my mac. So this is my one chance to blog. Well I would like to say that I have some deep things to say, but I am not sure that I do. (I have to type fast now, the technical problems have been solved) The past few weeks at D4 we have been discussing alot about giving, and generousity in our world. Discussing issues about how rich we are in North America and how blessed we are. Then we are turning the corner and trying to get the students to donate to aidscarenow.org campaign. It is interesting to see that kids are giving money. In the past we haven’t ever gotten donations from kids and last year when we tried a service project we only had one kid attend. However, I am starting to see kids become more interested in talking about giving time, money, etc, and I pray that they will turn this talking into actions. But now I must ask myself, how generous am I? Am I just giving money and not willing to give of my time? Do I use my job as a way to get out of helping others in the rest of the world? How can I begin to not see ‘our’ world as ‘the’ world? While I feel like I have been challenging youth in this area, I feel more so that God is challenging my thinking as well.

Computer Project Phase One

Update to the computer project that I had talked about earlier. First of all, I have been able to raise $2000 towards the project and therefore I was able to purchase a new computer for myself at the office. That’s right I got a new 20inch iMac and I only used it for the day and I love it. With it I will be able to run Mac OSX and WinXP! As the ‘tech guy’ at our office I am trying to switch everyone over to a mac and so far it is working out great. Another blessing that God gave us on this project was finding a good deal on this iMac and getting it for only $1100! This would retail for $1699. Stay tuned for updates on Phase Two, that’s if I can raise quite abit more money for the server that we need at the office. Thanks to everyone who has given already. Blessings.

Foundations

I am beginning to rethink the way I view the Bible. Instead of looking at scriptures as my foundation I am beginning to look at scriptures as just one anchor in my faith. I heard it said recently that if an outsider where to try to understand the trinity that they might look at it as “God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Scriptures” To me this statement means alot and is a warning.

If we are to look at scripture as our fondation then where is there room for the Holy Spirit to work in your life? Using words like foundation is such a linear building term, in fact it makes me uncomfortable.

In Brian Maclaren’s book “A New Kind of Christian,” instead of comparing it to a building he compares it to a spider’s web. Where is the web’s foundation? Well, it doesn’t have one. Exactly.
