Not That It Happened To Me Monday: Geek edition

Thanks to Living in the Gray for the inspiration on today’s topic. Truly everyone needs to click on that link and visit all the post she has on this. So funny. Anyways, I thought I would give it a shot.

If you are a die hard addict to your computer, and when you are trying to finish up a order online for some Christmas presents and the computer crashes. You might try to just reboot said computer and discover that it won’t boot up anymore. At which point you also discover that the computer’s hard drive is dead, finished, done. Oh, but you feel good about yourself because said computer is on warranty and you have a nice backup of the whole computer. However, you then realize that the backup is a week old and that you just finished a rather important design and the only place it is stored is on said hard drive.

So you panic.

Mainly because the design came together so quickly and you felt it was an inspired work that you feel is now lost forever. But being a techie, you take said hard drive to another computer and try to recover said files. Upon connecting the dead hard drive to your work computer, you realize that your work computer is now locking up as well. Ah, but this computer is okay you say to yourself it hasn’t been rebooted in 39 days. So you reboot only to discover it is doing the same thing as the previous computer.

Real life altering panic begins to set in.

At this point you realize that it just isn’t your day. Thankfully, this computer isn’t dead, but was just performing a rather lengthy update and after awhile booted up successfully and worked as always.

So glad that this didn’t happen to me as this would suck, hard.

New Site

First off, I have to tell everyone that Terribly Poetic nows has permanent location in cyberspace at www.terriblypoetic.com and as well you may notice some of the links above are missing. That is because they have moved to www.poeticindustries.com

This is the first of a serious of changes that I hope to make to improve these sites. There will be more coming that will introduce a new look to the site and hopefully a way to run the site as I am looking into switching to my own site run Wordpress. While I love iWeb for its simplicity and ease of setting up my first foray into self created blogosphere, I long for more options, more editablity, and ultimately I hope that this will aid in my ability to post more often. Currently with iWeb, I can only blog from one computer. This puts a serious crink in my style when I think up a great blog post while at work, or travelling or driving in my car, or in a coffee shop and I don’t happen to have access to that one particular computer.

So stay tuned as it is going to take some time to make the switch.

First Video

I didn’t really want to type much, but thought I should put something up on the site. Go ahead and watch the video. Sorta my first unofficial podcast episode I guess. Although I wouldn’t call it much for being under a minute long. Either way I think it is cool. In less than a minute you will see my computer magically create one of the Poetic Industries Wallpapers. Maybe this will just be the start of my video updates. Who knows. If it does, what would you like to see on the show?

Road Trip

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the Grunau Western Canada Tour. We are heading South to Caronport and Swift Current. Then from there we venture through Alberta, and Southern BC. It will take us about 6 days to arrive in Abbotsford where we will stay for a week or so before heading home. We are very excited to get to visit with many friends and supporters whom we haven’t seen in quite awhile. We are planning on taking our computer along with us and we hope that we can keep you updated along our travels. Long car rides, a full car, lots of coffee, and a 2 year old should make this a eventful trip.

I’m online more

So today I became a contributor on a new blog. One dedicated to my inner geek. Check me out on Tech Talk. I made my first post on solving some problems I was having with iChat. That’s all I’m gonna say. If you call yourself a geek and you like gadgets and solving issues on your computer, its a must read.

Still trying

So I must confess that we do indeed have a new computer, and I still manage to find a way to not post on here more often. I felt like I did a better job in Feb with 5 posts in the month than I am now that I have a computer. Lately my world has consisted of graphic design (for other people, not the fun kind), Calbreak, and this week being overcome with a massive headcold. Thankfully, I am beginning to see the light at the end of the sick tunnel, however, it is just the beginning when it comes to Calbreak. Calbreak is our annual high school spring break trip for those that haven’t heard of it. As usual I am involved a bunch of things before the trip, however, Dawn is the most involved as she is hired before the trip for admin purposes. This just adds to the busyness of life. Then come March 20-30 I will be off to California. However, coming home is not the end of it, but merely the beginning as I set out to create much of the trip video.
We are grateful to my parents for all the babysitting they have been doing to allow Dawn to work as much as possible at the office without having Libby join her.(Which has happened still, funtimes!) Especially in the last two days when my parents took Libby to the farm for the night. Not only did it give Dawn the ability to work 2 full days at the office, but it also gave Dawn and I the chance to have a night out. We don’t seem to find time often enough to get out without Libby and this one chance was awesome. Despite still being abit sick we had a great night out. Dinner and a movie, with relaxing at home after without tripping over toys, or having to read stories. It was a good break.

Well, I just thought I would let you know that I am and will continue to try posting more. But when Mar 20 hits, don’t expect much till say April 30th.

We are back!!!

It’s official. We have a new Macbook. This is the first official post from the new computer. That means that I don’t have to type much for words in this post. Just show you the new web gallery I made. It has pictures from the past few months that we have been without a computer. Enjoy. Click here to go directly to the gallery.

Vision

Recently I found myself awake at 1am frantically writing down and idea I had while trying to sleep. While I have this happen on occasion, it is rare that I feel that it is God waking me up with something. However, this time I think it just might have been. While I have been struggling to rework my job description to include a more rounded use of my strengths and to use my strengths for ministry to be more effective at my job, this idea might just help with that. Until recently I would never have called myself an artist, in fact most of my life I have been either classed as a “geek” or a “jock” as I played a lot of sports in high school and college (still play ultimate, it rules, anyways), as well I have always been a computer junkie. However, I am finding more and more that graphic design is art. Yes, I know it seems like a no brainer, but for me an artist is someone who goes to school and majors in art and minors in italian (sorry Crystal) and does lots of painting and talks abit difference than the rest of us. But everyone is really abit of an artist. Think about Kindergarten and Grade 1, everyone in the class loved to draw, sculpt, paint, and create. We are born with this innate desire to create. So what happens to us when we get older? Art becomes uncool, geeky, and boring. This is a shame. I only wish that I had learnt more about art as I feel very uneducated as a graphic designer and artist.
Then I begin to think about ministry, the church, and art. In our western evangelical churches we have removed much of the art. Much of this due to the reformation and the iconoclastic controversy, but I won’t get into that here. While we have art in the church it is mostly limited to music. Remember that I am being very general in that statement, there are plenty of churches that use the arts to a more fuller degree. The point is this: many new young musicians who grow up in the church can use this gift for service and worship in the church, but many new young artist will struggle to find a way to use their gifts for service and worship. If they do they have to be very creative and often stick their necks out. Take for instance a venture started by a youth I know. He decided to make t-shirts to benefit Corwin’s adoption process and is giving all the profits away, through his online store called Provadenic. It is truly amazing that this student is doing this, however, if he didn’t have it in his means financially to be able to do this where would he have taken his idea and his art too? And it is for exactly this reason that I came up with the idea below….

It is still very much a work in progress and much of the heart of the community will most likely change as it grows, but take alook at the raw data I wrote down late one night and tell me what you think, tell me if you are interested, tell me young people that I should talk to, you name I am looking for feedback and connections from local Artists.

Artist Community
To come up with a real name. Ideas Anyone?

Vision:
To see local artists, designers (film, fashion, graphic, etc) spur one anothers
passions through a sharing of ideas, with open dialogue and meaningful spiritual
discussion.

Goals:
1.To reach out to other artists by providing a safe place to gather, share ideas, and
discuss relevant issues
2.To see more Christians use their gifts in this area for service and worship
3.To encourage and inspire on another
4.To give people a place to dialogue about spiritual issues without being a “Church”

Practical Ideas
>Forums to discuss ideas or concepts artists are working on
>Profile Nights – to share work and to share spiritual conversations
>Groups – the use of small groups in homes within the larger network
>Shows
>Teaching – both spiritual teachings as well as practical teaching. ie. FCP Training,
Painting Classes, etc
>Use these gifts/passions to raise funds for local and global initiatives/social actions as
our service.

Graphic Designer Available

Recently I have found myself doing a lot of graphic designing for others, whether it is other ministries, missionaries or just someone looking for a cheap designer. I have been doing T-shirts, brochures, wedding invitations, posters, displays, post cards, prayer cards, and even a design for a frisbee. The most odd thing about this is that I do very few projects for my current job at Youth For Christ. Oh don’t get me wrong, I have done the odd graphic here and there, and have done some video editing, but none of them seem to be full on projects. The biggest reason I design for others is because I love to design and needed to find a creative outlet. I also tend to find people to design for that really appreciate my work. Its not that people at YFC don’t like my work, its just that I am not given the opportunity to do alot of projects here. While this could be because someone else in our office is very creative and gifted in design as well and traditionally has done alot of the projects. However, it is not his fault that I don’t do more projects…. this is just the DNA of our office and I don’t want to fight this trend any longer. Currently I would love to be designing more, but my current lack of a decent computer at home is making that quite impossible. Also, as this is one of my skills and gifts, I would like to use this talent in my job more. Therefore, if you are interested in having me design something for you, just give me a shout and I can make arrangements. I often do designs for other ministries and my reimbursement is done as a gift to help raise my support. Although I have been know to work for gift cards to superstore, futureshop and the like. So let this be my formal announcement that I am a Graphic Designer who is available.

I’m back

Don’t get too excited by the title. It doesn’t mean that I am back and have a new computer. I’ve just resolved some issues and am able to post to this blog from my computer at work. Thanks to iDisk and .Mac for that. Anyways, I’ll try to stay away from geeky conversation in this post. We had a great Christmas holidays hanging out with lots of family. Libby and Taylor couldn’t get enough of each other. The picture is just one of many showing off just how happy and joyful they where to be around one another. (And so is Auntie Annie!) I would love to post more photos, even create a new album, but that will all have to wait for the new computer. This Christmas season we tried to keep the focus off all the presents, and I think some of our new ideas where good ones. However, I do gotta say that Libby and Taylor are the ones we focused the gift giving to. We have so many toys our house could have the whole basement turn into Libby’s room just to store all her stuff. I was thinking I should keep some of her toys and rewrap them for next year. Especially the small present we (her cheap parents) bought her, don’t think she looked at it once the grandparents and aunt’s got here.
We had a great holidays and got to spill the beans to the family about our new timeshare property. It was fun to explain about trading timeshares and show them the huge RCI catalog of places to goto all over the world. Who knows maybe next year we will be somewhere warm. Just so you know we will take bribes for those who want to use our timeshare. Maybe all you have to do is click on that paypal link on the right. (Fingers crossed)
Well, this time I hope that I can be truthful when I say that I hope to get back to regular blogging. But its not like I made a New Year’s Resolution about it or anything. Although that’s probably a good thing. How many people actually keep those anyways?
