Things that annoy me
Really terrible promotion junk sold at Christian stores. Things like “Testiments”, Christian Poker Chips, bumper stickers, etc, etc really annoy me. In fact they make me mad. On more than a few occasions I have found my way into a certain Christian bookstore in Saskatoon only to get upset and want to leave in a hurry. This so called “Christian Gear” makes me angry and sad. Is this really what its meant when is says in the Bible to “write these things on our door posts and remember them” (that’s a paraphrase not direct quote) I believe that when we buy/sell/own/whatever these things that we are using God’s name in vain. We are cheapening his name, his Word, and truth. I could go on and on about this. The straw that placed this was seeing this picture on a blog I read. And yes, that is a shot glass. Augh.

I personally don’t see what makes you so upset about this. It could be my atheistic views but come on…its just words written on things. Whats the big deal?
It’s not just this one that makes me upset specifically. It’s all the “christian gear” junk that does. I believe that my God is Holy and righteous and that His name and Word are as well. Why do we trivialize this so much by using his name as a bumper sticker? Does that really make God smile? Or does living out His truth and helping the orphan and the widows and downtrodden? Christian bookstores and gift shops filled with this stuff remind me of Jesus and his anger at the temple.
I hear you! I may not be as passionate about this at this point but your comment really makes me think. These thoughts are very valid and I am often upset when I see little things like ‘prayer angels’ to clip to your belt and such like that…
Amen! Reducing evangelism to a crappy product that makes non-Christians squirm because of the awful groan-factor is sickening on so many levels. Let’s show people we love Jesus by our actions and our words, not our third-world made trinkets.
I suppose it depends on the purpose. If you wear a WWJD bracelet, perhaps glancing at your wrist reminds you to act Christ-like. But then again, it could just be a fashion statement. That being said: I am the former employee of a Christian bookstore, and I suspect that your beef is accurate more often than not. Your shotglass example is a wonderful example – how Christlike is one liable to act while plastered?
It does feel like a cash grab, all that gimmicky crap. I simply would never get a “Christian” bumper sticker, because I cut too many people off.
