I came across this portfolio from Abduzeedo and just had to post it here. Joel Grimes knows how to capture a person. His work makes me want to pick my camera back up again. These pictures are beautiful. I encourage you to check out his site as I have just picked a very small sample to wet your appetite.

This photographer is obviously gifted and has amazing composition. They look more like artwork than photos. The backgrounds in the latter 2 pics are well chosen.
That being said… oh, processed digital photography. These photos are cool, but IMO, the digital effects (HDR and desat) detract from the potential classic ‘natural’ beauty of a portrait. But I digress…
I think it must also be noted that digital photography stems from actual darkroom effects. I believe that some of these photos are in fact classic. It’s not as if photos before computers were never post processed. While some effects are obviously easier, quicker and more polished on a computer, I don’t think that it makes them any less ‘natural’ or ‘classic’ than if it had been done in a darkroom.
I find it interesting how you say that they look more like ‘artwork’ when in fact, all photography is really ‘artwork’. If you have to distinguish between a photo that isn’t and one that is, what is your criteria?
Yeah, yeah, I know it’s all art. I just meant that it looks more like something made by hands than made by lens. If you know what I’m saying.
But isn’t the something made with a lens, still something made by hands?
